Report on the quality of life and mobility of people with oxygen therapy

Activate with Oxygen

Mobility is a serious problem for these patients

● More than 650.000 people in Spain receive chronic oxygen therapy.

● People with chronic respiratory diseases suffer from serious transport deficiencies that impede their mobility and affect their quality of life.

● More than half a million people with chronic respiratory diseases and dependent on portable oxygen devices are barely able to leave their homes. Unlike other handicaps, transportation is not adapted for the lung patient.

According to SEPAR (Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery) 650.000 people receive oxygen therapy at home, and 20% have portable oxygen devices. Daily activities, such as going to the cinema or the theater, can become a drama for these patients, who have an average age of over 60 years, given the impossibility of recharging portable oxygen devices. "Nearly 30% of this population ends up in social isolation and depression," explains Dr. Pedro Landete Rodríguez.

The “Activate yourself with Oxygen” survey indicates that many patients go outside for less than an hour a day due to the absence of an infrastructure that facilitates the recharging of portable oxygen devices that have a maximum autonomy of about three hours.

This study, carried out by the Lovexair Foundation, has the backing of GRAP, the Primary Care Respiratory Society and SEPAR, with the collaboration of Neumosur, the Southern Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery Association and the supply companies Vivisol and Vitalaire.
