The Lovexair Foundation organized a workshop on "How to gain confidence and learn to be more active", aimed at people with reduced mobility, or who suffer from chronic respiratory diseases.

This activity included the participation of Bibiana Navarro, PhD in psychology from the University of Granada and director of the Bnm Psychology Center. Bibiana, during her intervention, placed special emphasis on the concept of patient empowerment as a key tool to improve health and increase people's satisfaction.

In this sense, it was pointed out that there are many external factors that influence when dealing with a chronic disease, such as socioeconomic, cultural, environmental factors, in turn, the attitude of the affected person when assuming your self-care is essential. For this, it is necessary to have good information about its process and the type of recommended activities, increase perceived self-efficacy, gradually carrying out small adapted activities that can be overcome and that have a plus of social reinforcement, opting for group activities, such as go out for a walk with other people with whom you can share, etc.

This activity, which featured testimonies from people who have had organ transplants, was very enriching for all the participants, since most of them pointed out that they were able to adapt to their new life and have always been aware that they can live differently. way. Thanks to the exchange of experiences, patients and family members acknowledged feeling satisfied with the new direction their lives have taken.

In the afternoon session, the workshop had the collaboration of Dr. Pilar Cejudo, pulmonologist and physician-rehabilitator of the Surgical Medical Unit for Respiratory Diseases of the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville. On this day, the participants, mostly yoga teachers, showed their interest in knowing how they can help students who have asthma, COPD or some other respiratory disease.

During her speech, Dr. Pilar Cejudo stressed the importance of measuring oxygen saturation during training in Respiratory Rehabilitation programs, since if it drops below 90%, it is necessary to administer supplemental oxygen.

The saturation is not a fixed value, it varies when a respiratory infection occurs (cold, flu or pneumonia), there is an exacerbation of the underlying chronic respiratory disease (COPD, asthma...) or, simply, we do physical exercise. This variation must be less than 5 points above the basal saturation value, that is, above the value at rest. Higher variations can be indicative of problems.

He also pointed out the importance of practicing exercise as long as it is adapted to the circumstances of each person. In turn, the practice of a physical activity will bring you great benefits such as overcoming limitations and being more independent. On the other hand, the Respiratory Rehabilitation Unit of the Virgen del Rocío Hospital provides patients and family members with instructions for practicing physical activity outside the hospital, and when they are discharged from the Respiratory Rehabilitation program.

At the end of the day, the need to make the latest advances in m-Health available to society was discussed. In this way, the patient will be able to keep a daily control of their care plan, which includes the practice of exercise individually or through the practice of a team sport.

Currently, the patient has to travel to the hospital or a health center to receive health care. In the health of the future, advances such as video consultation will allow the patient to have better and greater access to health services, in addition to reducing costs.

In this way, citizens will gain autonomy when managing their illness and, in turn, will be able to manage their daily care plan thanks to the collaboration of health professionals.

In short, it is essential that health guides citizens towards prevention and self-care. For this reason, the Lovexair Foundation develops these types of activities in order to motivate chronic respiratory patients and their families to overcome their fears and show that you can lead an active life by gaining confidence and with resources to help you achieve your personal goals.

In addition, Lovexair would like to thank the Fundación Valentín de Madariaga y Oya for providing the space.
