Bronchiectasis is a lung disease that affects hundreds of thousands of people around the world. It is characterized by dilation of the airways or scarring so that the airways are unable to clear mucus properly, resulting in recurrent lung infections. Bronchiectasis creates a significant burden for patients and their families. It can lead to an accelerated loss of lung function resulting in long-term disability and premature death. The disease can occur at any age, although most people are diagnosed in adulthood. Although there is currently no cure, early detection and treatment of bronchiectasis can improve quality of life and promote longevity for those affected.

Although bronchiectasis is often considered a rare disease, its prevalence is increasing worldwide.

"Bronchiectasis has been a neglected disease and a lack of awareness causes many patients difficulties and distress," said Professor James Chalmers. “We have made great strides in the last 10 years, but there is much more to do in research and awareness of the condition. We are supporting World Bronchiectasis Day as part of our ongoing engagement with global partners to address this neglected disease."

Lynn Schnapp, MD, President of the American Thoracic Society, added: “Currently, in approximately 40% of cases, the cause of bronchiectasis is unknown. That is too much. Our patients deserve better. By partnering with other global societies, our intent is to broaden awareness of this disease to improve the lives of patients around the world."

“We are encouraged to work with other leading global lung health organizations as part of World Bronchiectasis Day to raise awareness of bronchiectasis around the world,” said Associate Professor Lucy Morgan, Chair of the Lung Board of Directors. Foundation Australia and Chair of the Australian Bronchiectasis Registry. “We are also committed to better understanding the impact of bronchiectasis in adults and children in Australia as we strive to improve their quality of life and equitable access to evidence-based therapies,” she added.
