We were recently invited as new members of GAAP to attend the First World Summit on Breathing, as an event prior to the ERS.

Representatives - from both the medical and patient communities - shared their perspective on "how we are working to empower and educate people to improve their health." This new event offers the opportunity to learn how different cultures with different political systems, each at its own stage of development, can work together as one voice: that of the patient.

Working as a coalition of patient organizations is extremely important. It means that we do not have to compete to find resources, and that we can strengthen our knowledge and experience in respiratory diseases.

Respiratory care, funding for research, and institutional recognition by policymakers to recognize the dramatic impact the disease has on population health globally, is now a major concern.

ELF and ERS held their awareness event “Healthy Lungs for Life” in Paris with the support of the mayor, Ana Hidalgo, who has promoted an ambitious program to reduce environmental pollution. Spirometry testing and education to help people quit smoking are key activities for congressional advocacy action targeting those most at risk for lung disease: 990 tests performed in 2 days, an overwhelming success .

We also met with a number of healthcare professionals, patient organization representatives and partners, who were interested in learning more about our clinical study and the HappyAir care model that we are starting to test with patients and healthcare professionals in different countries, on a new platform that has been recently launched.

Much work is still needed to bring digital resources to patients and clinicians, to improve patient empowerment and respiratory education. Implementing solutions to support healthcare professionals and working with people to develop their understanding of the disease, manage their own plan of care, in a systematic way, would allow us to reach our common goals more quickly. But we are on it...

Yet the same issues that affect millions of people around the world still need to be addressed: early diagnosis, poor adherence to therapeutic care, medication or exercise, access to pulmonary rehabilitation, uncontrolled asthma in young people, uniform access to treatment for rare diseases in specific countries, basic inhalers for people in Africa…

Our goal is none other than to continue working with our global networks and partners, to help develop structures and capabilities to make solutions as widely available, affordable and accessible as possible.

The needs of people are the same all over the world. Our job is to harness the benefits of a digitally based society with the skills and knowledge developed in a supportive environment of patients, families, organizations and healthcare professionals committed to change and willing to learn new ways to help people. people to manage their own health.

Next year we will provide logistical and local communication support to the ELF, together with patient organizations for the ERS Congress in Madrid. We already have some new ideas, which we hope to develop with organizations, entities, institutions and the entire community that will participate in 2019.
