More than 60% of asthma or COPD patients do not follow their inhaler treatment correctly, which has a negative impact on the effectiveness of the treatment

Improving the inhalation technique of this group of patients is equivalent to better control of the disease, fewer visits to the doctor and, therefore, to a better quality of life

Seville, May 7, 2018. On the occasion of World Asthma Day, which this year has taken place on May 1, Chiesi Spain and the Lovexair Foundation, with the collaboration of Vivisol, have organized the XNUMXst Nordic March ”Breathing is Life ”. The objective of this physical activity, which took place this Saturday in the city of Seville, has been to make people with asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) or other respiratory diseases aware of the importance of leading a healthy life, exercising and use inhalers correctly.

It is estimated that more than 60% of patients with asthma or COPD do not correctly follow their treatment with the inhaler1. The problem is that “each of the inhalation devices requires specific maneuvers and these are often unknown to patients”, explains Jordi Giner, Nurse at the Pulmonology Service at the Hospital de la Sta. Creu i Sant Pau (Barcelona). . If the maneuver is performed incorrectly, the medicine does not reach the lungs properly and does not have the expected effect.

The main consequences of an incorrect inhalation technique are poor control of the disease due to not receiving the necessary doses, an increase in symptoms and an increased risk of exacerbations or crises, one of the main causes of hospitalization. "There are studies that show that patients with asthma or COPD who do not take the medication correctly have more exacerbations, more admissions, more visits to the emergency room and even mortality levels also depend to a large extent on the medication being administered correctly. ”, warns Jordi Giner. All this equates to a worse quality of life for those affected.

One of the most common errors when taking medication is "not exhaling prior to the inhalation maneuver, which prevents the patient from correctly distributing the aerosol in the lung", according to Jordi Giner. Among the errors derived from the device, Giner highlights "the difficulties in charging or not knowing if the device is full or already empty." There are people with asthma or COPD who have been taking their medication incorrectly for years. Improving the technique of this group of patients is equivalent to better control of the disease, fewer visits to the doctor and, therefore, to a better quality of life for these people.

The XNUMXst Nordic March “Breathing is life”

The march is part of "Breathing is life", a program that aims to contribute to the knowledge and awareness of the population about asthma and COPD and the importance of physical exercise and the correct use of inhalers. This has consisted of an urban tour of the city of Seville that is particularly suitable and adapted to this group of patients, although the activity was open to the entire population free of charge. During the march, the participants have had the help of a specialized instructor, who has offered them instructions to correctly carry out this technique that uses special poles.

The choice of a Nordic walk to complement the training activity is not accidental. Exertional intolerance is a distinctive feature of people with respiratory problems. However, there is the paradox that practicing physical exercise on a regular basis not only prevents the appearance of these pathologies2, but can also slow down their development3 and is a key factor in their therapeutic approach. "It is essential that these patients exercise daily because it favors a better pulmonary response, better breathing and better physical conditioning," says Jordi Giner. Nordic walking is a very complete activity because it involves the whole body in a symmetrical and balanced way.
