Coinciding with World No Tobacco Day, the Nofumadores.org association has asked the Government to ban tobacco smoke in all hotels, inside and outside the premises. Nofumadores.org recalls that the latest study by the Autonomous University of Madrid concludes that 80% of the terraces do not comply with the regulations, which is why it has launched a campaign to modify Law 28/2005 on Sanitary Measures against smoking in a more restrictive sense. Fernández Megina affirms that "64% of the population wants tougher policies against tobacco in public spaces and the government does not stop undermining the existing law in favor of tobacco companies."
Among the main measures proposed by the association, in addition to the end of smoke on terraces, are the legal equality of electronic devices and water pipes with tobacco products in all aspects: sale, supply, consumption, advertising, promotion and sponsorship -as is already the case in the Basque Country where vaping is prohibited in the hotel industry-; because there is already scientific evidence that the active and passive consumption of these devices is not harmless to health, apart from the fact that it does not contribute to the denormalization of tobacco in our society.
In addition, the association maintains that the decoupling of smoke and hospitality should be implemented. Bars and restaurants must be smoke-free, both inside and outside by law, to prevent both minors and hotel workers, as well as pregnant women and adults with any ailment, especially respiratory or cardiac, from being affected by smoking. passive.
Regarding the sale of tobacco, the association urges to apply a substantial increase in the price of the pack, a measure that has a direct impact on consumption. The points of sale, in addition, must be cut as much as possible. Tobacco would be sold only in tobacconists, ending the sale in hotels, gas stations and airports. Nofumadores.org also asks for plain packaging, which has already been adopted in other countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Norway, Ireland, Hungary, Slovenia, Australia and New Zealand.
Nofumadores.org collects the aspiration of two thirds of the Spanish population to expand smoke-free spaces to all parks, football stadiums, beaches and private vehicles in which children circulate. Nowadays, and except for the Nou Camp, and a good number of stadiums in the Basque Country such as San Mamés, Anoeta, Mendizarroza and Ipurúa, the rest of the first and second division stadiums allow smoking in their stands, making an impossible combination a reality: sport and illness. The Association maintains that it is time to put an end to smoke in stadiums and move forward in the same direction as the 2016 Basque Law on Addictions. In the Basque Country, with the support of the Basque-Navarre Society for Tobacco Prevention, materialized legislative advances that should be imitated in the rest of Spain.
