The Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS), formed by the union of important health institutions worldwide interested in promoting respiratory health, celebrates World Lung Day on September 25, 2018. The objective of this day is to raise awareness in society about the importance of respiratory diseases and the serious health problem they pose to the world population. For this reason, patient organizations have conveyed to the UN and the WHO the importance of lung health in our daily lives, and the impact of these diseases.
To promote this action, a letter has been launched through the Change.org platform to encourage society about the great health problem posed by respiratory diseases.
Practical information:
- 65 million people suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 3 million die each year, making it the third leading cause of death worldwide.
- 10 million people develop tuberculosis and 1,4 million die from it each year, making it the most common deadly infectious disease.
- 334 million people suffer from asthma, making it the most common chronic disease of childhood.
- Pneumonia kills millions of people each year making it one of the leading causes of death among the very young and among adults over 65 years of age.
- At least two billion people are exposed to high levels of smoke indoors, one billion inhale polluted outdoor air, and one billion are exposed to tobacco smoke.
To reduce the prevalence of lung diseases and improve respiratory health, we must inform and educate the world population about the importance of prevention and early diagnosis.
World Lung Day is a key event to promote the World Charter for Lung Health, and raise public awareness about the importance of respiratory health and air quality.
World Lung Day will be a focal point to promote initiatives that influence lung health. On the other hand, it will be a time to encourage healthy lifestyles and adverse factors that lead to lung disease.
We invite everyone to sign the World Charter for Lung Health to express their solidarity with respiratory health. We also ask people and organizations to carry out activities related to this cause. The actions may include the preparation of editorials, press releases, letters to the editor, legislative proposals, publication of posts on social networks, etc. Or events such as conducting spirometries, or orientation workshops to quit smoking. Several leading lung health organizations have expressed their support for World Lung Day, and we encourage everyone to follow their example.
Thank you!
