The sheet on asthma that is presented below has been possible thanks to the collaboration of Boehringer Ingelheim and is part of the development project started in February with the presentation of the Comparative Table of Minority Respiratory Diseases, which was awarded at the I International Congress on Rare Respiratory Diseases held in Valencia.

The author of the same es Eva Marotto and has had the supervision of doctors Jose Luis Rojas Box, Pneumologist coordinator of the COPD Process at the Hospital de Alta Resolución de Écija and Carlos Colás Sanz, Allergist at the Hospital Clínico de Zaragoza.

The file, after defining the disease, addresses, among other aspects, the etiology and risk factors, the pathogenesis, the symptoms, the diagnosis, the classification of severity and control of asthma, exacerbations and drug treatment.

Definition

ASTHMA is a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract, in whose pathogenesis various cells and inflammatory mediators are involved, conditioned in part by genetic factors and which presents with bronchial hyperresponsiveness and variable airflow obstruction, totally or partially reversible, either by the action of medicines quite spontaneously. It is a syndrome that includes different phenotypes that share similar clinical manifestations of probable different etiologies, hence its complexity.

Asthma is NOT a rare disease

In Europe, a disease will be considered rare, minority or orphan, if it affects less than 5 out of 10.000 inhabitants. The prevalence of ASTHMA is highly variable in the world, ranging from 2 to 12%. It is estimated that it affects 300 million people worldwide. In Spain, as in the rest of the world, there has been an increase in prevalence in recent years, probably related to industrial development.
