World Lung Day 2019

The Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) and Lovexair celebrate World Lung Day 25 on September 2019.

9Introduction

The Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS), formed by the union of important health institutions worldwide, celebrates World Lung Day on September 25. The objective of this day is to raise awareness in society about the importance of respiratory diseases and the serious health problem they pose to the world population.

For this reason, patient organizations have conveyed to the UN and the WHO the importance of lung health in our daily lives, and the impact of these diseases.

To promote this action, a letter has been launched through the Change.org platform to encourage society about the great health problem posed by respiratory diseases.

Practical information:

  1. 65 million people suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 3 million die each year, making it the third leading cause of death worldwide.
  2. 10 million people develop tuberculosis and 1,4 million die from it each year, making it the most common deadly infectious disease.
  3. 334 million people suffer from asthma, making it the most common chronic disease of childhood.
  4. Pneumonia kills millions of people each year making it one of the leading causes of death among the very young and among adults over 65 years of age.

To reduce the prevalence of lung diseases and improve respiratory health, we must inform and educate the world population about the importance of prevention and early diagnosis.

Key date for lung health promotion

World Lung Day is a key event to promote the World Charter for Lung Health, and raise public awareness about the importance of respiratory health and air quality.

world lung day it will be a focal point for promoting initiatives that influence lung health. On the other hand, it will be a time to encourage healthy lifestyles and adverse factors that lead to lung disease.

We also ask people and organizations to carry out activities related to this cause. The actions may include the preparation of editorials, press releases, letters to the editor, legislative proposals, publication of posts on social networks, etc. Or events such as conducting spirometries, or orientation workshops to quit smoking. Several leading lung health organizations have expressed their support for World Lung Day, and we encourage everyone to follow their example.

World Lung Day 2019 Theme

On September 23, just two days before the UN High-Level Global Meeting, the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is held. UHC requires that all people receive the health services they need, when they need it, without financial hardship.

Universal coverage is particularly important for people with respiratory illnesses. For example, a disruption in the supply of drugs for tuberculosis patients could lead to the development of drug resistance, with serious consequences. Abrupt unavailability of asthma medications could cause serious suffering and even death. The unavailability of a health care provider usually means a delay in diagnosis, which could be fatal for lung cancer patients.

The global spotlight on UHC represents an opportunity for substantial progress in the fight against lung disease worldwide.

On the occasion of World Lung Day we are asking the lung health community to raise awareness of the burden of respiratory disease, while also advocating for UHC. #treatmenow #treatmenow #treatmeagora
